The second post of Anthony Flack’s take on the history of clay animation in games. This week he looks at a game that he considers to be a landmark in video game art and creativity: The Neverhood. It has been announced recently that Anthony Flack is hard at work on his upcoming action-platformer Cletus Clay, which has been in development for several years now. Much like Platypus, all objects, backgrounds and sprites are made out of clay and animated using traditional stop-frame techniques (e.g. The Neverhood). What makes a bad game bad, from a fiction writer’s perspective The Neverhood is a 1996 PC CD-ROM Claymation video game created by animator Doug TenNapel and released by Dreamworks Studios. It is an adventure game. Each clay animation was painstakingly captured frame-by-frame. Cartoon Network fixture ‘Samurai Jack’ will soon get his own feature-length theatrical release, thanks to a new film company dedicated to making 2-D animated flicks with low budgets targeting a young male audience. It’s the first of three titles heading into production, along with ‘Neverhood’ and ‘Seven Deadly Sins.’ The Neverhood, a film based on the cult favorite claymation PC-based computer adventure game created by Doug TenNapel and released by Dreamworks Studios in 1996. Also a feature based on Samurai Jack, with original creator Genndy Tartakovsky attached to write and direct. Variety announces a new indie movie studio, Frederator, to produce cheap, yet AWESOME, 2D animated properties… Though known primarily for Earthworm Jim, artist Doug TenNapel also created The Neverhood, a claymation world of adventure and intrigue where at least two games were set in the 1990’s. Given the games are out of print and go for $50+ on eBay, two Destructoid editors decided to deliver their ode to this lost world of gaming bliss.
